President's Message

We have many opportunities and challenges ahead of us. The most significant one is that the progress at the Great Park is moving forward and with that the fine tuning of the property boundaries and near term development of the soccer fields and infrastructure of the new Marine Way is impacting our site. What does this mean for our flying site and vertical zone? Nothing changes immediately.

However, we will be moving our runway, pits, parking, and vertical zone to another location likely within the field we currently fly over. If you look at the overhead picture of our flying site the yellow runway centerline is a close approximation of the location of Marine Way.

Everything on the Balloon side is Great Park and the other side is County. We are working with the County to evaluate alternate positions for our runway and parking likely on the other side of our current flying field. This poses some challenges with respect to the sun and what angle the runway can be placed.

We are being careful to evaluate this area and have not yet met on-site with the County to review options. They want to work with us and we are working towards scheduling a meeting to review. As more details become available you will see email updates, information on the website, and in Hanger Talk.

We have a local Cub Scout troop that will be coming to our field on Saturday, November 5th for an introduction to R/C Flying. There will be about 9 boys there with parents and troop leaders. We want to make sure and demonstrate for them the enjoyment we have with our hobby. We will by taking the boys up for short introductory flights on our club trainers and I am sure they will also be excited to see the variety of planes that we fly.

We have reached the time of year when we must look to our membership for those willing and interested in stepping up to a board position. We are looking for nominations now and will be voting on who you want to be our board of directors for 2012. We have 7 open board positions and seek to have a board that will continue to build, refine, and develop our club, field, and training programs through next year. You must be willing to attend monthly board meetings (generally the 3rd Monday of the month). The Nomination Committee will confirm with any proposed candidates that they are willing to serve on the Board. We will be asking all proposed Candidates to make their personal statements at our November club meeting. We will also post these statements on the club web site after the meeting. Email your nominations to:
nominations@ocrcc.com.

AMA renewals are underway. Make sure you get your renewal processed and be ready for our club renewals.

The AMA Expo is coming. It will be at the Ontario Convention Center on January 6th-8th. Again our club will have a booth and will need volunteers to help staff the booth and spread the word of our club and hobby.

Reminders:

Wings Program: We will be wrapping up by the end of the year. Each member is required to pass the wings certification in order to fly next year. I encourage everyone to have one of the club certified instructors review yours wings flight so we can achieve this goal. With safety our number 1 responsibility we must all work to make sure that everyone flying at our field can maintain control of their plane by executing the following maneuvers:
• Take-off (right or left)
• Fly a flat oval pattern clockwise
• Fly a flat oval pattern counter-clockwise
• Fly a flat figure eight
• Land

Radio Interference: I still hear about some downed planes where radio interference has been mentioned as the possible cause. We want to document when and where these occur. If this happens to you or someone else make sure it is logged in the Field Marshal (red) notebook in the bin. I also want to mention that there are many pilot created reasons that this could occur based on any of these situations:
· Receiver antennae must be away from metal objects and wires. I have seen antennae and satellite receivers placed along servo wires or beside lipo's or ESC's. Any of these could cause diminished or blocked reception at times. Check your radio manufacturer's specifications for placement criteria.
· Verify your ESC and receiver voltage and load criteria. Most of us are flying with ESC's that provide both motor power and power for the receiver and servos. ESC's and Receivers have voltage and load specifications with most rated at 4.8 volts and load rated for 4 or 5 servos. If you have digital servos these draw more power. If you have more servos or load than the rating you could experience brownouts, or low power to the receiver and servos that would result in loss of control.

Field Marshal's: We will be scheduling another Field Marshal training class in October and I encourage everyone to attend who has not attended one of these sessions. The Field Marshal's (and every member's) responsibility is to enforce and oversee the following key aspects in addition to field oversight:
· No Badge / No Fly
· All flying must stay beyond the yellow runway centerline
· No taxiing in the pits or spectator area
· Communication on the flight line (pilots calling out takeoffs and landings)
· Everyone must have their own fire extinguisher in out and accessible in their pit area

Flight Safety: Everyone must be diligent in maintaining safe flying in compliance with our rules. All flying must be done beyond the yellow runway centerline and over the grass. To protect the safety of members and visitors no plane should ever fly behind the flight-line (orange fence). In the event a plane breeches this line the pilot must land the plane immediately and determine the cause of this over flight. We must always maintain a safe zone for all behind the flight line.
Field Marshals: There must be a field marshal on-duty anytime our field is open. If you are the first or only one there please put on the field marshal badge from in the container. Our on-duty field marshals have ultimate authority covering all flight and safety aspects.
Field (Our #1 Asset) Safety: With our ever increasing attendance and use of our field we must all be diligent with all aspects of safety. This includes overall safety while flying and personal safety with our planes and batteries. We must all be aware of what is going on around us when flying or just relaxing in the pits.
"No Badge - No Fly": Everyone flying must be wearing their 2011 membership badge. If you have not received your badge yet, then confirm your membership with a field marshal against the current membership roster that is in the storage container. We also have visitor and student badges that are checked out and back in each day so everyone flying must have a badge visible on them.
Fire Extinguisher: Everyone must have their own fire extinguisher out and accessible in their pit area. I look forward to seeing everyone at the field and meetings. Please communicate anything of interest or concern to myself, any board member or field marshal.

Holiday Field Hours

Saturday 12/31 the field will close down at 3pm for the Great Park preparation for the family New Year’s party that begins at 5pm. Sunday, 1/1, and Monday 1/2 the field is open as normal.

AT6 Texan has been used extensively in air races. Highly modified ones such as this are seen at racing circuits hitting speed in excess of 100mph!

F16 models such as this have been popularized with advancements in electric ducted fan (EDF) technology. This particular model can reach speed of 140mph!

This is a highly sophisticated micro RC helicopter, Align T-Rex 250. Capable of full 3D aerobatic routine, yet small enough to fit on the palm of your hand!

One of the more popular scale warbird at the field, F4U Corsair, has distinctive gull wings. This is an all foam E-Flight model coming in for landing.

Truely a classic, the Cessna Skylane 182 was introduced in 1956 and has taught tens of thousands how to fly. This scaled version is also a good trainer for the RC pilots.

This Andrew Jesky designed "Slick" is a high performance 3D aerobatic plane. In the hands of capable pilots they can perform just about any manuevers.

One of the more well known axis warbird of the World War II era, German FW-190, makes its way onto the Great Park taxi way.

A great racers of 1930, the Granville Brothers Gee Bee, is faithfully reproduced by this scale model kit.
